1. New FDA Guidelines for Sunscreen

The new guidelines aim to make sunscreen labels more accurate.  They take effect in one year, so it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with them now.  One of the most important changes is that labels cannot indicate a sun protection factor (“SPF”) of 50 or above. An SPF of 30 is sufficient.    Additionally, water resistance claims on the product’s front label must tell how much time a user can expect to get the declared SPF level of protection while swimming or sweating, based on standard testing. Two times will be permitted on labels: 40 minutes or 80 minutes. Finally, manufacturers will not be permitted to make claims that sunscreens are “waterproof” or “sweatproof, or identify their products as “sunblocks.” Also, sunscreens cannot claim protection immediately on application (for example, “instant protection”) or protection for more than two hours without reapplication, unless they submit data and get approval from FDA.

2. Choose the  Right Sunscreen for the Activity.

There are all kinds of specific sunscreens geared towards different activities, such as swimming, lounging on the beach, and sports.   You want to choose a waterproof sunscreen for water activities, of course.  You can choose a spray-on variety for sports.  You will need a baby-friendly sunscreen for babies over 6 months of age, such as California Baby or Badger. These sunscreens contain zinc oxide only, and no other chemicals that could be harmful to a baby’s delicate skin. Remember, before 6 months of age, it is not recommended to use any sunscreen at all, so remember to keep the youngest babies out of the sun.
