Enjoy a Favorite Meal Together (But Not Breakfast in Bed)

One of the highlights of Father’s Day is to enjoy a meal together as a family. A picnic in the park, barbecue lunch or dinner, or a nice dinner out are all great possibilities. However, many Dads we know wish that kids would skip making breakfast in bed for them. While this is a sweet gesture, many Dads say the kids like to serve the meal but then leave dad to eat breakfast alone. Dads want togetherness on Father’s Day, so make sure that whatever special meals you serve or partake in, that you also enjoy it together.

Get Crafty for Cards and Gifts

Dads appreciate the time taken to make cards and gifts for him to treasure. There are simple crafts you can buy at Michaels that even young children can help assemble. These include photo cards and hand and footprint clay. One simple idea is a “stepping stone” craft, which involve decorating stones for the garden. This can turn into a treasured collection in the coming years. Craft supplies are widely available at stores like Michael’s, Target and Amazon. Traditional gifts like ties and clothing are also nice gestures, but Dads will appreciate handmade items for years to come.

Spend Special Family Time Together Doing Something He Enjoys

Most important is time spent together. If Dad enjoys hiking or fishing, arrange to spend the day together at a local park. If he wants to learn something new, arrange for a lesson where all the family members can take part, like a golf lesson, photography or woodcarving. Even if everyone in the family can’t participate directly, just spending time doing the activity together will become a wonderful memory.

Establish Yearly Traditions

Maybe the golf lesson will turn into a new hobby. Establish a yearly tradition of activities to do with dad and any extended family members so that there is something to look forward to each year.

Make Memories

Planting a tree or garden together, or creating a personalized photo book, or creating a CD of Dad’s favorite music, are wonderful ways to make lasting memories for your dad to treasure as a memento of how special he is!

It was our family’s summer vacation. Every year my father drove us either north or south from New Jersey to sightsee. Everything was planned to the last detail with his AAA maps and guide books. Last summer it was Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. This summer it was New England.

Today was to be the highlight of our trip. We’d taken a ride on a tour boat to see the charming lighthouses of Boothbay Harbor. Now we were in for an even bigger treat – a lobster lunch. It was a place right on the dock. Boats and gray green sea surrounded us, up in the distant hills were charming New England church spires, cottages and pines.

Lobster traps were piled high on the wharf. There were outdoor picnic tables and tanks where you got to choose your own lobster. We tied the plastic bibs around our collars and dipped the sweet white lobster meat into the little red-and-white checked cardboard containers of drawn butter. It was delicious.

And what better way to end a delicious meal than with a palate-pleasing sweet? To me, even then, dessert takes the sublime up a notch to sheer perfection.

“What’s for dessert?” I innocently asked. Oliver Twist did not receive a more shocked reaction for asking, “Please sir, may I have some more?”

My parents were aghast. Here they had just proffered us a treat undreamed of in their own childhoods and their greedy offspring had the gall to ask for dessert.

Today I remain resolute that a delicious meal should conclude with dessert. And happily for me, the folks at Lobster Gram agree. Their Fantastic Father’s Day Feast for four includes Maine lobster tails, filet mignon steaks, Alaskan king crab legs – and chocolate-dipped gelato ice cream balls. By using a Lobster Gram coupon at Coupon Cactus I can get an additional 15% off the special price of $149.95 plus 4% cash back. I’m ordering now for delivery in time for Father’s Day, June 21.
