Sears

March 24, 2009 |

In 1886, when Minnesota train station agent Richard Sears bought a shipment of watches and sold them to earn extra cash, he didn’t know he was about to launch one of the world’s great retail empires. A year later he moved to Chicago, teamed up with watchmaker Alvah Roebuck and started selling watches by catalog. Ten years later the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog offered everything from cars and farm implements to bicycles, stoves, groceries and underwear. If you needed it, you could order it from Sears. Sears built a worldwide reputation for quality products and satisfied customers.

As America went from rural to suburban, Sears started stocking its catalog goods in retail stores and eventually phased out its catalog business. But Sears’ reputation for high quality products at fair prices continues. I’ve been a Sears shopper all my life. Dad always swore by his Craftsman tools, said they were built tough to last a lifetime. Mom relied on a kitchen full of Kenmore appliances, as I do today. We’re still using the Kenmore fridge we bought when we got married. I’ve got one of Sears’ new energy-efficient side-by-sides in my kitchen now, but that first Kenmore still handles the overflow.

Dependable quality and good prices have made Sears my first stop when I need something. Well, actually, my second stop. First I check Coupon Cactus for great Sears coupons; there are new coupons every month. This month you can spruce up your yard with big coupon savings on lawn and garden orders or get in shape with a coupon for $220 off NordicTrack treadmills. On Coupon Cactus you’ll find Sears coupons for housewares, linens, electronics, apparel and more; and Coupon Cactus members save an additional 1% cash back on most purchases.
