Shaun White’s heart-pounding second run in the men’s superpipe final on the second stop of the inaugural Winter Dew Tour last Sunday was nothing short of amazing. The 2006 Olympic gold medalist’s winning snowboard run showed the folks in Mount Snow, Vermont why he still rules the pipe. I’ve been a fan of the red-haired “Flying Tomato” since he captured the world’s attention at the Olympics and X Games with his impossibly high-flying takeoffs into thin air.
While I’m getting a little long in the tooth to ever emulate Shaun’s moves, a recent trip to the local slopes shows there’s plenty of up-and-coming competition waiting to challenge the snowboard king. I saw a pair of brothers, aged 4 and 7, who were charging down the slope on their boards. Stopping seemed to be their biggest challenge; but what they still lacked in finesse, they more than made up for in enthusiasm and energy. This winter, my nephew made the jump from skateboarding to snowboarding and has been having a blast with his friends learning to transfer tricks learned on concrete to the snow. He says a wipe out on snow is much less painful!
